Second G20 Dialogue on Water

The second G20 Dialogue on Water, which was organised and hosted in a virtual format by Italy's G20 Presidency on 29 September 2021, provided the occasion for G20 Members to emphasise the value and importance of sharing experiences and promoting mutual learning on sustainable water management practices.

The second G20 Dialogue on Water, which was organised and hosted in a virtual format by Italy’s G20 Presidency on 29 September 2021, provided the occasion for G20 Members to emphasise the value and importance of sharing experiences and promoting mutual learning on sustainable water management practices. 

The meeting, focusing on “Sustainable Water Management: Cross-sectoral and integrated approaches”, was opened by the Troika Environment Ministers of Italy, Indonesia and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and highlighted the urgency and importance of promoting a precautionary, efficient and conservative use of water resources at global level.

The G20 Countries provided more than 30 national best practices which will be included in the Water Platform, a digital instrument implemented by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia intended to share experiences in the domain of sustainable water management globally. The Water Platform was officially launched at the opening of the event.

International partners such as FAO, OECD and UNEP also contributed their recommendations underlining the interlinkages between water and several Sustainable Development Goals. The centrality of partnerships and collaboration among the G20 members emerged from this one-day dialogue, particularly their role in bolstering “enlightened” cooperation for co-designing and co-planning new responses to address common challenges – at the scale and pace required to ensure effective outcomes.
